Would it surprise you to hear that Scotland is home to some of the best preserved rainforest in Europe? Well, if so, this might be because so little remains due to fragmentation caused by invasive species, over grazing, and other stressors. All that is left of the Scottish rainforest is an area slightly bigger than Edinburgh, yet this fascinating habitat is still considered one of the most biodiverse habitats on the British Isles.
The Scottish rainforest is a temperate rainforest. These are rainforests found in areas with high levels of rainfall all year round, little fluctuation in temperature, and very clean air. These particular conditions are found in less than 1% of the planet, but can be found on the west coast of Scotland, influenced by the Atlantic Ocean.
Within the Scottish rainforest can be found ancient and native tree species, rare mosses, liverworts and lichens and some of the country’s most iconic animal species such as the wild cat, red squirrel and great spotted woodpecker. It also provides ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration and flood risk mitigation. Yet our rainforest is not showing signs of regeneration due to the levels of fragmentation it has experienced and needs urgent intervention.
My name is Douglas and I’m completing a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Management. As part of my honours project, I’m investigating how our understanding and perception of the Scottish rainforest impacts the conservation of this special habitat. As such I’m reaching out to people from every region of Scotland and asking them to complete a survey which should take between 10-20 minutes linked below. The survey is completely anonymous, and I’d greatly appreciate if you took the time to contribute to my research.

Many thanks
